Three acronyms, one underlying job: being findable when someone is looking for what you do.
People used to search, scan a list of links, and click one. Increasingly they get an answer instead — a snippet at the top of the page, a voice response, or a paragraph written by an AI assistant that may or may not mention where it came from.
Three terms describe optimising for those different destinations. They overlap far more than the separate acronyms suggest.
The original: appearing in the ranked list of results. It covers whether search engines can crawl and index your pages, whether each page targets something real people search for, how fast the site is, and how it links together internally.
This is still the foundation. Nothing else works on a site search engines cannot read properly.
Structuring content so it can be lifted and used as a direct answer — in a featured snippet, a "people also ask" box, or a voice assistant response.
In practice this means answering a specific question clearly and early, using headings that match how the question is actually asked, and adding structured data so a machine can tell what the page contains. A page that buries its answer in paragraph nine will not be used, however good the answer is.
The newest of the three: making your content clear, specific and well-attributed enough that AI assistants can use and cite it when someone asks about your area.
What appears to help is being concrete. Specific facts, plain claims, real detail, and a clear sense of who is saying it. Vague marketing language performs badly here because there is nothing in it to quote.
Ranking positions. They depend on competition and on systems no agency controls. AI citation is less predictable still, and changes as models are retrained.
What can be guaranteed is the work: correct technical foundations, clean structure, accurate markup, and content that answers something real — the substance of technical SEO as we practise it. Anyone guaranteeing a position is selling you something other than search visibility.
